Disaster Preparedness & Community Resilience

Prepared communities, faster recovery.

BITAN builds the capacity of vulnerable communities across flood-prone West Bengal and cyclone-affected coastal areas to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters — through training, early-warning systems, and post-disaster rehabilitation.

Overview

Resilience Before the Disaster Strikes

West Bengal and Tripura are among India's most disaster-prone states — facing annual flooding, cyclones, and landslides that devastate already-vulnerable communities. BITAN's disaster management work focuses on building resilience before disasters strike, not just responding after.

We train Village Disaster Management Teams (VDMTs), support community-level Disaster Management Plans (DMPs), and link communities to district administration early-warning networks. Post-disaster, BITAN provides rapid needs assessments, relief distribution support, and livelihood rehabilitation.

What We Do

  • Village Disaster Management Team (VDMT) formation and training
  • Community-level Disaster Management Plan (DMP) preparation
  • Mock drills — flood, cyclone, and fire evacuation exercises
  • Early-warning system linkages with district and block administration
  • First aid and search & rescue basic training for community volunteers
  • Post-disaster rapid needs assessment and relief co-ordination
  • Livelihood rehabilitation after floods / cyclones
