Overview

Building Zero-Waste Communities

India generates over 150,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, yet a vast majority remains unsegregated and ends up in overflowing landfills. BITAN works with Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and gram panchayats to design and operate integrated waste management systems that are community-owned and financially sustainable.

From training rag-pickers as formal waste entrepreneurs to setting up decentralised composting units, our approach creates livelihoods while protecting the environment. We link these systems with state and national schemes to ensure long-term viability well beyond the project period.

What We Do

  • Door-to-door waste collection and source segregation in urban wards
  • Decentralised composting units for organic waste (2–5 tonnes/day capacity)
  • Plastic waste collection and channelisation to authorised recyclers
  • Community awareness drives — Swachh Bharat & state sanitation programmes
  • Waste entrepreneur training — transforming rag-pickers into licensed collectors
  • Liquid waste / drainage management in rural clusters
  • Behaviour change communication (BCC) in schools and community groups
