Integrated Solid Waste Management — ITC CSR

About This Project

A flagship CSR partnership with ITC Limited spanning four years, establishing end-to-end solid waste management in 12 wards of Budge Budge and Maheshtala municipalities. The project trained 85 waste collectors, set up 8 decentralised composting units, and achieved over 80% source-segregation compliance across participating wards.

BITAN worked closely with the municipality's sanitation department to map existing waste flows, identify gaps in infrastructure, and design a system that could be sustained by the ULB after the project period. Community mobilisation was central — ward-level waste committees were formed and trained to monitor collection, handle grievances, and liaise with the municipality.

The composting units now divert approximately 2 tonnes of organic waste from landfills every day, producing compost sold to local nurseries and urban farmers — creating a revenue stream that partially funds the system's ongoing operations.

What We Did

• Baseline mapping of waste generation and existing collection routes across 12 wards
• Formation and training of 12 ward-level waste management committees
• Training 85 waste collectors in PPE use, route planning, and source-segregation protocols
• Construction and commissioning of 8 decentralised composting units (2 TPD capacity each)
• School outreach — waste segregation curriculum delivered to 3,200 students in 18 schools
• Monthly community meetings — monitoring compliance and addressing grievances
• Plastic channelisation — linkage with 3 authorised plastic recyclers in Kolkata
